Back in 2011 Artefact partnered with The Gates Foundation, Fred Hutch's stats group SCHARP, and a scientific tools group Lab Key to create a product to bridge gaps in the HIV research process. They sent my research partner Dave McColgin and me to immunology classes to learn the language of the scientists. T-cells, B-cells, assays, monoclonal antibodies, clades. We then had just enough expertise to interview scientists, statisticians, researchers, lab techs, and principal investigators and understand the breakdowns in collaboration in their networks. I won't go into all the details, but through a very user-centered design process, we iterated and tested to what is now the CAVD DataSpace. I supported it off and on for 6 years until I left Artefact. It's one of the products I'm the proudest of.

Overview and mission

Here is a walk-through of the DataSpace as of November 2023. Has it really been 12 years? Time flies when you're making products.
